So I have been reading up a lot on BuddyPress and I have been trying to make modifications to my Boss theme, but it seems tough to understand the setup and hierarchy of BuddyPress. I am not really sure what files take precedence and where to go to make a change.

The first thing I want to do (that I thought would be relatively simple) was to add additional Field Groups to the Profile view. I notice if I go to edit on my profile, I get options for the ‘Base’ Profile group as well as the other profile groups I have created. However, when viewing my profile it only shows my “Base’ group along with a ‘Social’ group that I assume the Boss theme ads. How do I access all the other extended profile fields that I have added under profile groups? What file would I even look to edit? Is it a tempate? Do I have to call more things in some BuddyPress Profile loop or members loop?

I tried to edit something in member-header.php, as well as index.php, and members-loop.php. I’ve done a lot of edits, then reverted back and tried again. I guess the framework just doesn’t make sense to me. I read the Template Hierarchy on the BuddyPress codex… but I guess it is just less straightforward to me compared to wordpress’s codex. I know what single.php does and I know that I can make templates off that… so how would I modify a profile view/page? I am having trouble figuring out what file I’d even edit. Any direction toward a tutorial or any basic explanation would be great.

@chiefgeek the new fields will appear under Base but only after you add them to the profile, it will not display the field unless there is data in it. These fields are added under Dashboard>Users

Ah… yes. Now I am just trying to figure out how to show some groups for some users and not for others. I have looked into member types… but I am not sure if that make more sense or if I should use something like roles and capabilities. I think the new member types is actually more of what I am looking for right now, but I don’t see a whole lot of work done with it yet. If I would to have 2 types of users and have them choose their type upon registration… would member types be the way to go?

P.S. Is there a way to mark something as resolved?

@chiefgeek I don’t know enough about the new roles and capabilities. I doubt there is anything created for allowing different user roles to access different groups based on that but you could fill our a custom development form here for a quote: https://www.buddyboss.com/buddypress-developers/

Unfortunately no way to mark as resolved.

“Buddy-bbPress Support Topic” is a cool plugin for being able to mark threads as resolved/not resolved!
