Question
May 7, 2015 at 6:12 pm #39936@chiefgeekSo I have been researching for days now and I guess having different member types is complicated. I have successfully registered member types, but haven’t been able to do much with it. As I researched I realized that maybe I am not using the correct terminology.
So… when it comes to visibility. We seem to have the options of showing certain Profile Fields… but I don’t see how we can restrict which type of users/members/profiles we can see.
So for instance. If we have a student and a teacher and we go to mysite/members… how do we make it so that students can’t see other students and their associated profiles in the “directory”, but only members/users/profiles of type teachers. I know I can go into the member loop… but I mean, how do I completely not allow students to talk to other students or view other students or somehow land upon their profile. I have also seen exampels of “Bands and Fans” How do we make it so that Fans can only see bands.
How do we restrict the visibilty of someons actual “profile” and not profile group or fields – meaning mywebsite/memebters/profilename-here – if that profile is a certain member type, role or whatever you wanna call it. (What is the correct term anyway if you wanna have two different types of members)
I guess this is kinda like circles on Google+ or actually like a dating site. If I am a male looking for a female… I would want to not see any males or be able to access their profiles, but view and see females. Perhaps upon a request I can see deeper into the females profile… but how do I just remove males to begin with?

AnonymousHi @chiefgeek you can easily expand using this approach https://codex.buddypress.org/developer/member-types/ and it will create additional meta box in extended profile and conditional logic are also available, you can display x-profile data on the basis of it.
But such topics are more close to buddypress development not related to Boss theme

Varun DubeyMay 8, 2015 at 2:50 pm #39963@chiefgeekYeah I’ve read that and that is how I registered the member types and I even used it to mess with some of the loops… but it doesn’t really do much as of now other than just allowing you to register the type. It is more a buddypress update in the right direction and I am sure more things will come out of it involving privacy and visibility as member types becomes utilized more. As of now though, member types doesn’t really make it easier to say… block certain profiles fields from certain users, or not allow visibility into different member types, or auto create different option on registration. Also there is only one field referencing it in the dashboard and that is only if you register the member type in the code. So while it is all possible to do what I described above while utilizing the new member types… it really is just a drop down right now just the same as a profile field.
It seems this sort of thing has been as issue with buddypress for a while so I am glad it is finally on the road map.
