A branded app is a white-labeled mobile app that is customized to your brand and pre-loaded with your courses. You will have your very own app on the Apple App Store and Google Play store, all customized with your own branding and content. It is your own app with zero BuddyBoss branding.

Do I need to write any code?
Absolutely not. Our app works just like building your pages on your website, with a familiar drag and drop style block editor and configuration settings that you fully manage from your own WordPress dashboard.
Do I need a Mac or any special software to publish my app?
No, you can build and publish your app from Windows or Mac. When you are ready to publish, you just click a button in your WP Admin and your configuration shoots off to our magical build servers in the sky that do all the heavy listing for you, compiling your app for iOS and Android and beaming your builds right back down to you in just a few minutes.
Who manages and maintains updates to my app?
BuddyBoss is responsible for the ongoing maintenance and upkeep of your app core code, we release app updates on average twice a month and all you have to do is periodically generate a new build to roll your updates into your app to be automatically released for your users to update in the cloud.
Which version of MemberPress does this work with?
The BuddyBoss App – Lite Edition requires MemberPress Pro or Plus plan. MemberPress Basic customers can upgrade to Pro or Plus to allow the App to function.
Which version of Tutor LMS does this work with?
The BuddyBoss App – Lite Edition requires Tutor LMS Pro. Tutor LMS Free customers can upgrade to Pro to allow the App to function.
How do payments work in the app? Is it the same as my website?
iOS and Android Apps are required to use In-App Purchases, this is a dedicated system of paying for products and services from within the familiar app interface. Those payments are processed by Apple or Google directly and do not go through your usual payment processor (like Stripe or PayPal).
Why should I use In-App Purchases, I already have payments on the Web?
IAPs are a requirement of the app stores if you plan to sell anything within your app. This means that when you sell courses, memberships, or subscriptions inside your app you are benefitting from the apps built in payment features to reduce checkout friction and often allow your students to register and pay in one tap. Setting up your In-App Purchases (IAPs) is easy and the conversion rate on IAPs is often much higher than your website.
I don’t want to pay commission to the app stores, can I avoid this?
Apple and Google typically take 30% commission on In-App Purchases, but there are some exceptions. If your app has annual revenue under $1M then you can apply for a reduction to 15%. Subscriptions also drop to 15% commission after the first year billed. You can avoid commission entirely however by not selling anything in your app and enabling the “Reader App” settings.
What is a “Reader App” and how does it work to avoid commission?
A “Reader App” allows your existing students to Login and progress through their courses and other content, but it will hide any premium content from being purchased and prevent any new students from purchasing your course or content on the app; they will have to make payments on your website and then return to the app afterwards. Reader app mode can be enabled from your settings and doing so prevents the app stores from taking commission.
When my app is ready, how do I publish it?

When the first version of your app is ready to be published our dedicated publishing team will manage the whole process for you from start to finish. All you need to do is hit “Publish” from your WordPress dashboard and our team will manually review every bit of your app to make sure it meets the app stores guidelines. They will send any feedback back to you to recommend any changes that you need to make before submitting then after you have implemented their feedback the team will submit your app to apple and google on your behalf. At that point Apple and Google will do their own manual reviews, each app will be reviewed separately and each app store might have some additional requests for you to change and implement. At all times our publishing team will communicate directly with the app stores on your behalf so you don’t have to worry.
How long does it usually take to get my app published?
From the time you purchase to the time you have a test version of your app in your hands to try out can be as little as an hour or two. From there it depends how long you want to spend configuring and adding things to your app before you are ready to publish. Once you are ready to publish we have seen apps get approved in as little as a few days to a few hours on rare occasions. Sometimes there is a bit of back and forth with the app stores where they require you to make certain changes that take you some time to implement, and sometimes there are temporary rejections while you implement those changes but you don’t need to worry about these and typically we see apps most commonly going live in the app stores within a month.
When I create a new course, does it display immediately? Do I need to update my app every time?
The content inside your BuddyBoss App updates in real-time as soon as you publish it, and your students do not need to download and install a new update when you publish new content or make changes to the pages or menus in your app. The only time you need to run an update to the app stores, to be downloaded by your students, is when you want to update your core app with a new feature, fix a bug, or change your app branding.
Can existing students log in to my app straight away using their existing accounts?
Yes! The BuddyBoss App is designed to work with WordPress account registration, so as soon as your app is live any of your existing students will be able to log into your app immediately without needing to create a specific “app” account. The same is true in reverse, any students who enroll into your app first, will be immediately able to log in on the web too.
Can I Sell Physical Products With This App?
Almost anything that you can currently achieve on mobile web, through the browser on your phone, is possible to achieve in the app using Web Fallbacks. This allows you to add custom links in your app that will open up a web browser inside the app and give your student the same experience as they would have if they were viewing your website in the browser on their phone. We don’t have a dedicated integration with any tools that allow for payments using Apple Pay or Google Pay (wallet payments)
Does this app work with other plugins?
Almost all plugins available for WordPress are compatible with The BuddyBoss App (as long as they use proper coding standards) meaning they can sit alongside each other with no issues. But unless we have built a dedicated integration with that set of features then the only way that functionality would work inside the app for most people is through Web Fallbacks (opening up a web browser inside the app). For example, if you have a plugin that customizes student profiles in some way on the web, that functionality won’t stop the app from working, but the customization won’t display in the app.
What happens to my app if I cancel or pause my subscription?
Your app requires an active license in order to run. This means you need to keep your subscription active in order for your app to continue to work. If you pause or cancel your subscription then (after a short grace period to allow you to rectify any billing issues) your app will stop functioning and you and your users will be shown a disabled screen prompting you to reactivate your license to continue using your app.
How does custom development work and how easy is it?
Most BuddyBoss App customers don’t need any true custom development or coding to customize their app. Through the use of custom App Pages built using the standard WordPress Block Editor, and Custom Menus as well as Web Fallbacks to replicate Web browser functionality that is enough for almost everyone. However, if you do want to add truly custom functionality to your BuddyBoss App and extend it beyond what is currently supported, then you can purchase developer access and write your own react native code with the help of our developer toolkit.
Why do I need to create Apple and Google Developer Accounts?
One of the biggest advantages of launching your own BuddyBoss App is that it is fully white label – meaning it is fully branded with your name, details, and published through your own accounts on the apple and google play store. For this reason you will need to create your own apple and google developer accounts which will allow you to publish the app. Creating these accounts can take a few days as you have to verify your identity and company legal details but once that’s done you will be adding our team to manage your account for you and we will handle uploading and publishing your build for you.
What kind of things can I do with push notifications?
Push notifications are an effective tool for engaging with your members. You can send manual or scheduled notifications to all your app users, or specific groups of app users and the content of the notification is fully customizable. Notifications can direct members to various destinations, such as a specific course, lesson, app screen or an external URL, enhancing the interactive capabilities of your app.
Is my app multilingual? Can my users switch languages?
The BuddyBoss App is “Translation Ready” and translatable into hundreds of world languages, including right-to-left languages. However your app can only be in one language at a time and your users can’t select their own language. You can change your apps language at any time from your app configuration and also upload any custom translations that you might need to, but the language if your app can’t be switched from the live app.
I already have an app in the app stores. Can I replace that app with this app?
Yes, if you have an existing app in the app stores then you can replace that app with this app. For iOS it’s a simple case of updating your app with a new version number, and for Android you will need your existing keystore information. When you publish your first build of your new app, we can publish that into the listing for your previous app and after the app stores review the app and it goes live your existing users will be prompted to download the new app from the app stores, removing the old one.
Do I need a website to launch the app?
No, one of the beauties of the BuddyBoss App is you actually don’t even need to have a website up and running in order to launch or run your app successfully. All you need is a WordPress installation, with LearnDash, MemberPress or TutorLMS installed and your course content configured on the back end. Then you can publish your app and have students register and enroll directly through your app without ever needing to build your web version if you don’t want to. This means you could have your app live in the app stores faster than your website up and running or even – never have a website at all!
