Hi guys –
Media 2.x is working well for us. Love it.
But I have site members regularly uploading photos that end up rotated 90 degrees. I’ve seen this problem outside of BuddyBoss Media where a photograph will appear to be “right side up” in a particular application or folder, but when it is moved into another application, it’s like the image’s meta data or something tells the application the image is to be rotated, or not to be rotated, or whatever ends up making the image 90 degrees rotated.
Can you shed any light on this issue (realizing, I’m sure, that some people are “doing it wrong”) – like what can a user look for when they are convinced that the photo is right-side-up on their computer but then uploading sideways?
And with that in mind, I know that you have other features in the pipeline for Media… is rotation or cropping on the list?
Thanks guys. You make great stuff.

@jgwolfensberger try this setting: Dashboard>Settings>BuddyBoss Media>Mobile Rotation Fix
Awesome! I had no idea that setting was in there. Probably just what we need. Thanks TJ.

No problem, I’ll leave this open in case that doesn’t fix it.
@tjchester – I’m afraid we do still have the problem. I know this might be the kind that’s tough to troubleshoot.
Something occurred to me. We use Smush It which, if I’m not mistaken, strips meta deta from the image to save space. The setting says “Remove EXIF data from JPEGs” – does the EXIF data possibly have the rotation instructions?
I have turned off “Remove EXIF data from JPEGs” and I’ll observe behavior.
But could you let me know if you guys think this might be it in the meantime?
Thanks man!
@jgwolfensberger nail on the head! EXIF data is the exact data you need to fix rotation. I’ll continue to keep this thread open until you confirm.
UPDATE. We’ve tested thoroughly on our site with Android and iPad (no iPhones on hand), and we’ve determined the following is 100% consistent for us.
Image attached. The *only* way to take a photo and upload it correctly, is to rotate it COUNTER-CLOCKWISE to a landscape mode.
This is true for both taking a photo right after choosing “Add Photo,” or for selecting an image from a folder/library on the device. Simply put: any photo that isn’t taken in landscape mode with the top of the device turned to the left will NOT upload correctly.
I have an image attached.
I hope this is helpful. Maybe we chalk it up to “behavior,” not an issue… but I’m sure that if you guys test and find the same results, you’ll possibly want to look into the EXIF data on the images and see if you can program Media to cope with this.

@jgwolfensberger can you confirm your plugin is no longer removing the EXIF data as reported earlier? If you disable SmushIt completely (possibly even delete it for testing) do you still have this issue? Also make sure you use the mobile rotation fix in the media plugin settings. You can see EXIF data here: http://regex.info/exif.cgi
Hi TJ –
I did deactivate WP Smush Pro entirely, and I do have the “Enable fix for mobile uploads rotating.”
I have a test/staging site I can give you admin access to if you guys can benefit from that. Also, my test site is *not* using any WP caching.
James
@jgwolfensberger please PM me admin credentials.
Sent! Thanks for looking into this 🙂
@jgwolfensberger I was unable to replicate the results on your site. Are you still having this issue? If so, please post images on your site so I may see the issue and EXIF data of said images.
TJ,
Not sure why, I can replicate it every time from an iPad. Weird. I just sent you a PM with a test member account’s credentials to our live site. I included a profile wall URL where you can see a sideways image uploaded today. If that’s not helpful, I can use an iPad to upload some more.
Thanks man… I really appreciate it.
James
@tjchester P.S. for the site that you have admin credentials for (qbugsocial.com), I just uploaded an image from an ipad, holding the ipad in the upright “portrait” position. It’s sideways on the activity feed.

@jgwolfensberger @tjchester
I have this same problem (also in BBMedia 3.0) and it seems that I got rid of it (on test) by:
– having the “Enable fix for mobile uploads rotating.” activated AND
– installing a plugin: ios images fixer
