Sensei-BuddyPress translation: Where are the strings?

After having generated translation files with codestyling localization and translated the most important frontend strings for Sensei, Boss. for Sensei and BuddyPress for Sensei, I now have a Kauderwelsch of languages in my frontend.

Where are the missing strings? Do I need a translation for BuddyPress itself, too? Is there an official BuddyPress translation for German, French and Italian?

Also I now have the problem with changed permalinks. Until now I had managed to just translate the fontend without affecting the English permalink structure. Not anymore! This is a problem. I remember that other plugins strictly separate strings affecting the permalink structure from strings visible to the backend/frontend users and marked these strings as as “Context” strings. Please do that, too!

Plus, I am wondering why I had to translate common strings like “Active Courses” or “… of … lessons completed” 3(!) times now.

Hi @nmschaller , Those are buddypress strings you need to add them as well, you can get corresponding language files from https://translate.wordpress.org/projects/buddypress/2.3.x, rename them and add them to wp-content/languages/plugins folder.

Translation strings will work without any specific permalink changes.

Hello @vapvarun,

I have tried it as you said. There were actually already buddypress language files in the folder you indicate. I replaced them with the current .po file, an .mo file was generated.

But no change on the mixed translations in the Groups screenshot I sent you.

Also, with the language files in this folder, codestyling localization does not recognize it and I cannot check or complete the strings.

p.s. It is interesting to see, in how many places there are language files stored. The files that I hand-translate, I store in wp-content/plugins/PLUGIN/lang/
These I can edit at any time but I have to back them up before updating the plugin.

all the plugins involved in your installation have a /languages/ folder in their directory, but if the language file you have is not complete, like i suppose it is, you may encounter english/german switches, as the german sentences overwrite the english ones only when present.

Buddypress is mostly complete, 98%… https://translate.wordpress.org/projects/buddypress/2.3.x you can suggest the missing phrases so that version will be complete in the next release *(in 2 weeks)

I just found out that the language files must have been installed automatically when I installed the BuddyPress plugin last week.

BuddyBoss team is causing me extra work again – for nothing.

I’ll have a look at missing translations.

the language files are “updated” when your WordPress installation is checking for new updates, so it may come way later than just after the installation… to answer that stupid situation, just force a update check and your language files will be updated to your proper language.

same for all the plugins

I just checked the “group” related strings in BuddyPress German; they are all translated.

Plus, I am experiencing the same problem with the exact same strings on my French and German site. Consequently, the missing strings must come from another source. But I have also searched for “group” in the different new plugins I installed from BuddyBoss, with the various text domains.

As you seem to be knowledgable in this:

Is there a place where I can put the translation files so that I can hand-update them via codestyling localization at any time AND keep them update safe so that I do not have to back them up before plugin updates?

I am thinking of these plugin translations that I have made myself for frontend strings:

WooThemes Sensei
currently in /wp-content/plugins/woothemes-sensei/lang

Boss Sensei
currently in /wp-content/plugins/boss-sensei/languages

Sensei Buddypress
currently in /wp-content/plugins/sensei-buddypress/languages

Sensei Course Participants
currently in /wp-content/plugins/sensei-course-participants/languages

actually, there is exactly what you need in the core system.

/yoursite/wp-content/languages/plugins/plugin_name-fr_FR.mo
/yoursite/wp-content/languages/themes/theme_name-fr_FR.mo

… 🙂

I’ve tried this and had a déjà vu: These paths only work for official translations that are automatically updated, not for translations that shall be present in codestyling localization for further editing.

This is the tedious process that I have to undergo to update a plugin with a self-made translation:

1. Go into Codestyling Localization and create a current .mo file for the plugin I want to update
2. Go into MiwoFTP and download the current .mo and .po files on my laptop
3. Back up my installation and update the plugin
4. Go into MiwoFTP and upload the .mo and .po files again
5. Go into Codestyling Localization and rescan based on the .po file in case new strings have been added, and go into the translation file and create a new .mo
6. Check in the frontend

This process was necessary for Sensei and Sensei course participants so far, now I also have to do it for Boss for Sensei, Buddypress for Sensei, and of course the Social learner theme.

In case of the theme, codestyling localization can’t even find the language files and asks me to pick one:

Language Folder: The translation file folder is ambiguous, please select by clicking the appropriated language file folder or ask the Author about!
Available Directories:

/var/www/mysite/htdocs/wp-content/themes/social-learner/buddypress

Particularly: When starting to translate I soon realized that there are the same strings in all three Sensei-related plugins. So which one shall I translate to effectively change the frontend strings of the course and lesson views within the personal profiles?

Hi @nmschaller, create a new folder inside /var/www/mysite/htdocs/wp-content/themes/social-learner/ with languages
and you can add attached mo and po files there.

There will be part for next version update of social learner.
