Smilies and Emoticons

Is there a way to add a good set of smilies and/or emoticons to the (whats new)(write something to) in the activity page or a friends wall?
the default smilies in wordpress are ok?? BUT you can’t see them, and everybody doesn’t know how to make a smilies using text without looking at a cheat sheet. a button or a drop down next to the add photo button should be simple enough? I searched for plugins but they are only for blogs, and my site is not a blog. Just simple point and click will do.
Any help will be appreciated.

NOTE: NOT tested with Boss previously. Not sure if it is 100% compatible with BuddyPress. Though some users report using it but not without some minor issues.
