Introduction
This guide shows you how to create custom tabs in member profiles and groups using a free plugin alternative. This is useful when you want to add custom navigation sections for content such as resources, dashboards, or embedded tools—without purchasing third-party plugins.
This solution works with BuddyBoss Platform and BuddyBoss Theme, using the BuddyBoss Tab Creator plugin.

Download BuddyBoss Tab Creator Plugin
Install and Activate the Plugin
- Log in to your WordPress Dashboard
- Navigate to Plugins > Add New
- Click Upload Plugin
- Upload the downloaded .zip file
- Click Install Now
- Click Activate
After activation, a new Tab Creator menu will appear in your Dashboard.
Create a Custom Profile Tab
- Navigate to Tab Creator > Profile Tabs
- Click Add New Tab
- Configure the Tab Settings:
- Enter Tab Label (display name in profile navigation)
- Review or customize the Tab Slug (auto-generated)
- Enable Only enabled tab will be visible to control activation
- (Optional) Enable:
- Set as default component
- Add new navigation position
- Show admin only
- Configure Availability (Who gets the tab):
- Select roles such as:
- All Members
- Administrator, Editor, Author, etc.
- Select roles such as:
- Configure Visibility (Who can see the tab):
- Choose from:
- Everyone
- Logged in Members
- Friends Only
- Specific roles
- Choose from:
- Configure advanced options if needed:
- Tab Link (redirect to a URL)
- Default Subnav Slug
- Item CSS ID
- Adminbar Item ID
- Expand Content Settings and add:
- Custom Content
- External URL
- Click Save Changes
Create a Custom Group Tab
- Navigate to Tab Creator > Group Tabs
- Click Add New Tab
- Configure the Tab Settings:
- Enter Tab Label
- Review or edit the Tab Slug
- Enable Only enabled tab will be visible
- (Optional) Enable:
- Are we modifying predefined tab?
- Site admins only
- Configure Enabled for (Availability):
- Choose which group types can access the tab:
- All Groups
- Public Groups
- Private Groups
- Hidden Groups
- Choose which group types can access the tab:
- Configure Tab Visibility:
- Select who can view the tab inside groups:
- Anyone
- Logged In
- Members Only
- Group Moderators Only
- Group Admin Only
- Site Admins
- Select who can view the tab inside groups:
- (Optional) Configure:
- Tab Link (for redirects)
- Item CSS ID
- Expand Content Settings and add your content
- Custom Content
- External URL
- Use the right-side Publish panel:
- Click Save Draft or Publish
Add Sub-Tabs (Subnav) to Profile and Group Tabs
You can add sub-tabs (child navigation items) to both profile and group tabs using the Subnav section.
- While editing a tab, scroll to the Subnav section
- Click Add New Subnav
- Enter the Sub-Tab Label
- Configure visibility and availability for the sub-tab
- Add content specific to the sub-tab
- Save your changes
Restrict Tabs to Specific Groups (Advanced)
From the Tab Scope panel (right sidebar):
- Add Associated Groups to include only specific groups
- Add Excluded Groups to hide tabs from certain groups
Use this when you want highly targeted tab visibility.
