BuddyPress Check-ins + BuddyBoss Integration

Add Location Check-ins to Every BuddyBoss Activity Post

What is BuddyPress Check-ins?

BuddyPress Check-ins by Wbcom Designs lets BuddyBoss members tag a physical location when posting activity updates, just like check-in features on Facebook or Foursquare. A check-in icon appears in the BuddyBoss activity input form and members can search for nearby places using Google Maps autocomplete. The checked-in location displays alongside the activity post on an interactive map. A Pro upgrade adds member and group directory maps, proximity search, privacy-tier controls for address display, and OpenStreetMap support so no Google API key is required.

Key Features of BuddyPress Check-ins

Activity Stream Check-ins

A check-in icon appears directly inside the BuddyBoss activity post composer. Members tap it to search for a location and attach it to their update, which then displays a map pin alongside the post in the activity feed.

Location Autocomplete

As members type a location name, the plugin suggests nearby places using Google Maps or OpenStreetMap data. Members choose from the list to attach an accurate, geocoded location to their activity post without manual coordinate entry.

Interactive Map Display

Check-ins render as interactive map embeds inline within BuddyBoss activity posts. Members and visitors can view the exact location, zoom in or out, and get a sense of where the activity took place without leaving the community feed.

Member and Group Directory Maps (Pro)

The Pro version adds a map view to BuddyBoss member and group directories, plotting each member or group as a pin based on their check-in location. Visitors browse the community geographically and click pins to view profiles or group pages.

Proximity Search (Pro)

Members search for other BuddyBoss members or groups within a specified radius of any address. Proximity filtering helps members in local or regional communities find and connect with people near them.

Location Privacy Controls (Pro)

Admins choose how precisely member locations display: full address, city and state only, or city only. Optional coordinate obfuscation offsets pins on public maps by up to 11 km, protecting exact home or work locations while still enabling location-based discovery.

Use Cases and Examples

Local and Regional Communities Connecting Members by Proximity

Local networking and interest communities use BuddyPress Check-ins Pro to help members find others near them in BuddyBoss. Members who check in to local venues appear on the member directory map, and the proximity search lets anyone filter for members within a set radius of their address. Local members discover each other through the map rather than scrolling an undifferentiated list, leading to more real-world meetups and stronger local ties within the community.

Travel and Lifestyle Communities Sharing Experiences from the Road

Travel communities and digital nomad networks use BuddyPress Check-ins to let BuddyBoss members document where they are when sharing updates. Members check in to cafes, co-working spaces, and destinations as part of their activity posts, creating a running location log visible in their profile. Followers track each other’s journeys through the activity feed and maps, turning the community into a living travel log rather than a static forum.

Event Communities Building a Map of Where Members Gather

Event-based communities use BuddyPress Check-ins to let BuddyBoss members check in to event venues and post updates from the location at the same time. The group directory map in the Pro version shows which BuddyBoss groups are active in which cities, helping remote members spot groups near them and request to join. Organizers see at a glance which cities have the most engaged members, informing where to plan future in-person events.

How to Integrate BuddyPress Check-ins with BuddyBoss

BuddyPress Check-ins works with BuddyBoss Platform out of the box. Follow these steps to get check-ins appearing in your activity feed:

1

Install from WordPress.org

Search for “BuddyPress Check-ins” in WordPress Dashboard > Plugins > Add New, or download the free version from WordPress.org and upload the zip file. Activate the plugin after installation.

2

Add Your Google Maps API Key

Go to the BuddyPress Check-ins settings page and enter your Google Places API key to enable location autocomplete and map display. If you prefer not to use Google, upgrade to Pro and switch to OpenStreetMap, which requires no API key.

3

Configure Privacy and Display Settings

Choose how member locations appear: full address, city and state, or city only. If using the Pro version, configure coordinate obfuscation to offset public map pins and protect exact member locations while keeping proximity features functional.

4

Test the Check-in Flow

Go to the BuddyBoss activity feed and confirm the check-in icon appears in the post composer. Type a location name and verify autocomplete suggestions appear. Post an update with a check-in and confirm the map renders correctly in the activity stream.

5

Enable Directory Maps (Pro)

If using the Pro version, activate the member and group directory map views from the plugin settings. Use the provided shortcodes to embed standalone maps anywhere on your site and verify proximity search works from the BuddyBoss member directory.

Benefits of Integrating BuddyPress Check-ins with BuddyBoss

Add Benefit Image 1

  • Location Context That Makes BuddyBoss Activity Posts More Engaging: Check-ins add a geographic dimension to every BuddyBoss activity post, giving members and their connections a richer picture of what’s happening. A post tagged to a venue or city is more interesting than a plain text update and prompts more comments and reactions from members who recognize the location or want to visit. Communities that use check-ins see more detailed, story-driven activity posts that drive higher engagement in the feed.
  • Geographic Discovery That Helps Local Members Find Each Other: The Pro version adds map views to BuddyBoss member and group directories so members can browse the community by location instead of scrolling a flat list. Proximity search lets anyone filter for members or groups within a specified distance, which is particularly valuable for communities with a local or regional focus. Members who would never find each other through text search connect through the map and build real-world relationships that strengthen retention.
  • Privacy Controls That Let Members Share Location on Their Terms: BuddyPress Check-ins Pro gives admins three tiers of location display precision — full address, city and state, or city only — so members are never forced to share more location detail than they’re comfortable with. Optional coordinate obfuscation shifts public map pins by up to 11 km, making proximity features work without exposing exact home addresses. Members who might otherwise skip location features participate when they trust that sharing a city-level check-in doesn’t reveal their street address.
