How to Publish Private Android Apps in Google Play Store

Updated

Publishing a Private Android App through managed Google Play allows organizations to distribute mobile apps exclusively to authorized users. Unlike publicly listed apps, private apps are available only to the organizations and users granted access, making them suitable for internal teams, employees, and business operations.

You can publish private Android apps through the Google Admin Console or Google Play Console, depending on your organization’s setup and publishing requirements.

Understanding Private Android Apps

Private Android apps are distributed through managed Google Play and are not publicly available in the Google Play Store.

Organizations can use private app distribution to:

  • Restrict app availability to authorized users.
  • Distribute apps to specific organizational units or groups.
  • Allow employees to install approved business apps.
  • Automatically install apps on managed devices.
  • Manage app updates and distribution settings.

Note: Private app distribution requires an organization configured to use managed Google Play. Available management options depend on your Google Workspace edition and device management configuration.

Publish Private Apps from Google Admin Console

You can publish a private Android app directly through the Google Admin Console using an APK file and an app title.

When you publish your first private app through this method, Google creates a Play Console account on behalf of your organization.

Private apps are typically available for distribution within approximately 10 minutes, although processing times may vary.

Upload Your Private Android App

  1. Log in to the Google Admin Console using your organization’s administrator account.
  2. Navigate to Apps > Web and mobile apps.
  3. Click Add app.
  4. Select Add private Android app.
  5. Click Create.
  6. Enter a title for your app.
  7. Click Upload APK.
  8. Select your Android APK file and click Open.
  9. Click Select to confirm the upload.

Important: This publishing method requires an APK file. If you are using a BuddyBoss Android Release build, verify that you have the required file format before proceeding.

Configure App Access

After uploading your app, choose which users can find and install it.

  1. Under the app access settings, select one of the following options:
    • Entire organization: Allow all users in your organization to access the app.
    • Select groups: Allow specific groups to access the app.
    • Select organizational units: Allow users within selected organizational units to access the app.
  2. If you selected specific groups or organizational units, choose the appropriate users.
  3. Click Continue.

Note: Group-based and organizational unit-based access options depend on your Google Workspace edition. Group settings may take precedence over organizational unit settings.

Configure Private App Settings

After selecting who can access your app, configure how it will be installed and managed on supported devices.

Set the App Access Method

Under Access method, select how users will receive the app.

  • Available: Users can install the app themselves through managed Google Play.
  • Force install: Automatically install the app on supported managed devices. Depending on your management settings, you may also prevent users from uninstalling it.

If your app requires a managed configuration, select Available first, complete the configuration, and then change the access method to Force install.

Configure Additional App Options

Depending on your organization’s device management settings, you may also configure:

  • Home Screen Widgets: Allow users to add supported app widgets to their device’s home screen.
  • Always-On VPN: Configure a supported VPN app to handle traffic from managed devices or work profiles.
  • App Auto-Update Timing: Choose how and when app updates are installed.
  • Testing Tracks: Make supported prerelease versions available to selected users.

Set App Auto-Update Timing

You can choose from the following update options:

  • Default: Allow Google Play to manage app updates automatically.
  • High priority: Install updates as soon as possible after they become available, subject to device conditions.
  • Postpone: Delay app updates for up to 90 days before the latest available version is installed.

Note: Some update and management settings are available only with supported Google Workspace editions or device management configurations.

Complete Your App Configuration

Once you have configured the app access and management options, click Finish to save your settings.

Your private app will become available to the authorized users or devices once Google completes processing.

Publish Private Apps from Google Play Console

You can also publish private Android apps directly through Google Play Console.

This method allows you to manage the app’s release and configure its availability for specific organizations.

  1. Log in to Google Play Console.
  2. Create a new app or select an existing app that is eligible for private distribution.
  3. Complete the required app information and publishing setup.
  4. Configure the app for managed Google Play distribution.
  5. Specify the organizations authorized to access the app.
  6. Upload the required Android release build.
  7. Complete the release requirements and submit the app for publishing.

Note: Publishing through Google Play Console may require a registered Play Console developer account and applicable registration fees. Organizations that want to use the simplified private app publishing process can publish through Google Admin Console instead.

For additional details, refer to Google’s Managed Google Play documentation.

Important Considerations

  • File Format: The simplified Google Admin Console publishing process requires an APK file, while the standard Google Play Console publishing process generally uses an AAB file.
  • Organization Access: Private apps are distributed only to authorized organizations and users through managed Google Play.
  • Device Management: Installation and update controls depend on your organization’s management settings.
  • App Updates: New app versions must use the same package name and compatible signing configuration as the existing app.
  • BuddyBoss App Builds: Confirm that your BuddyBoss Android build meets the requirements of your selected private distribution method before publishing.

Private app distribution provides organizations with a way to manage Android app availability while keeping the app accessible only to their intended users.
